Midterm Tests for Practical English (October 2010)

This semester we have covered simple present and present continuous statements.

Please check that you know the grammar structures in the exercises we covered in Unit 3. I could ask you some of these in a written exercise.

For conversation interview:-

We used health issues as the topic.

I want you to be able to:

Answer questions about health:

e.g. What are you doing to stay healthy? What activities are you doing these days? What do you usually do? What are you eating? Are you exercising?

Show that you understand the following expressions:
“cutting down on”:
“giving up”
“under the weather”

Be able to talk about what people are suffering from:

For example:
I have a stomachache.
She has a bad cough.
I have allergies. I am allergic to……

Express what to do when this happens.
If I have a cough I ………………
If she has a headache I think she should………………
When I feel very tired I ………………..
I want you to know the meaning of:
Never, seldom, hardly ever, once in a while, sometimes, often, frequently, regularly, usually, always.
And use them in sentences.

Conversation strategies;

How to encourage people to talk: how can you do this.
Discuss your sleep habits. I need ………… I sleep for…………….I usually only get ………

If I am very tired I…………….
If I don’t get enough sleep I …………
Be able to agree or disagree. (see p26)
e.g. I don’t need a lot of sleep.
Me neither.
Or : Not me. I have to sleep at least………….. hours a night.

Know how to use expressions like : Oh! Really? Wow! No way! Gosh! Are you serious?

Check p. 27 under “talk about it”
Be prepared to answer those questions.
And look at p.29. What do you do to relax? Prepare to answer this.
Remember I just want to see that you are trying.

If you have any questions ask me..
